Calaveras – A blue streak at Southland

Cry Calaveras, a 78-pound speedster, cools down after competing in a top-grade race at Southland Gaming and Racing Park in West Memphis, Ark. His home at Southland is the Northshore Kennel. Through the first half of 2012 with 28 races, Cal has won seven times and has seven runner-ups.

The odyssey of Pilot’s pups

Pilot takes a breather after giving birth to eight pups – three blue, five black and three girls. The pups were whelped in West Virginia on Jan. 6, 2010. From those pups, only Arri, Rollei and Zeiss have made it to the track. Graflex has a nice home in Nashville.Follow the career of her pups as they hit the racing circuit and Graflex's journey to Music City.

On the Farm

Kathy Hastings has been in the "dog" business more than 30 years having been involved with the racing industry at racetracks in Colorado and Kansas. From those experiences she has developed a love for breeding and the adoption part of the business in the heart of "greyhound country." Stay tuned to see her story.

At the Track

After negotiating the last curve, Coach St Escape (7) takes the lead at the beginning of the home stretch at the Birmingham Race Course. He eventually won by two lengths. The racing greyhoundâs powerful hind muscles and large paws and claws give them a strong, fluid stride. Stay tuned for the track stories.

In the Home

Romping in the Atlantic Ocean with your hounds is one of the highlights of attending the largest gathering of retired racing greyhounds on the East Coast. Every October, the event at Dewey Beach, Del., at one time attracted more than 2,000 hounds. The fall event will be showcased shortly.

Cry Calaveras is a blue doggie sprinting on Southland’s Arkansas (583 yd) course. Generally, when he has an outside hole in the starting box, he has a fair chance of winning. It seems his chances of winning are greater if he gets to the first turn close to the lead.

First time mom, Pilot (Nita’s Pilot) gives birth to eight pups on January 6th, 2011, three girls and five boys. It was not one of the best whelpings with only four surviving, with three as racers and one as a pet. See what Pilot and her pups are up to after they are born.
